How To Become a UL Qualified SFRM Contractor
Becoming an UL Solutions Qualified SFRM Contractor requires the completion of several steps. From application to accreditation, completing the program can take anywhere from a few months to a year or more, depending on various factors.
Step 1 - Write a Management System ManualSFRM Fireproofing Contractor companies applying for accreditation under the UL Qualified SFRM Contractor Program are required to have a documented Management System (MS) describing the procedures the firm uses to install fireproofing to the specifications, manufacturers installation instructions, and tested and listed system designs. Reference the UL Solutions SFRM Program Requirements when writing your company's MS Manual.
Step 2 - Pass the NFCA SFRM Fireproofing ExamCandidates for the UL Qualified SFRM Contractor Program must pass the NFCA SFRM Fireproofing Exam. Upon passing the Exam, the Contractor is issued a Letter of Completion from NFCA stating the name of the individual who completed the exam, exam score, and results of exam. The company then completes the steps to become NFCA CAP Accredited before proceeding to the next step in the UL qualification process.
Step 3 - Pass the UL Management System AuditThe UL Solutions Management System audit takes place at the SFRM Contractor's Office and at a project site to verify that the management system is working. UL Solutions will provide the SFRM Contractor with an Audit Report within a mutually agreed time that includes audit findings and conclusions, any identified non-conformities still remaining and eligibility for a Certificate. After completion of the UL Solutions Audit and providing proof of NFCA Accreditation, the Contractor will be issued a UL Solutions Qualified SFRM Contractor Certificate. Once the SFRM Fireproofing Contractor is Qualified, the Contractor appoints the person that passed the NFCA SFRM Fireproofing Exam as the Designed Responsible Individual (DRI). (The person is not considered a UL Solutions DRI until the company passes the Quality Management System audit by UL Solutions.) The UL Solutions Qualified SFRM Contractor Certificate expires 12-months from the date of issue and may be canceled or withdrawn by UL Solutions at any time. To remain current, the UL Solutions requires an annual re-audit of the Qualified SFRM Contractor's MS. The purpose of the re-audit is to determine if the Contractor, their DRI and their Management System still comply with all aspects of the Program Requirements.
Step 4 - Complete Payment to UL SolutionsThe UL Solutions Qualified SFRM Contractor Program is a voluntary, third-party accreditation program. There is an initial cost associated with the program, payable directly to UL Solutions, as well as an annual fee for participation.
Step 5 - Stay UL Solutions QualifiedOnce the company becomes a UL Solutions Qualified SFRM Fireproofing Contractor, the company needs to maintain their NFCA Accredited SFRM Contractor status. The DRI needs to keep CEU's in accordance with NFCA Contractor Accreditation Program.
